Tosa Inu

Tosa Inu, also called Japanese Tosa or Japanese Mastiff  is a breed of dog of Japanese origin that is considered rare. The breed is relatively young and – it originated in the second half of 19th century. It is one of the most fascinating and least understood breeds.

Tosa is a mixture of several breeds, native and European dog breeds such as English Bulldog, St. Bernard, Great Dane, Mastiff and Bull Terrier. Creation of the Samurai dog began in 1860 by crossing Akita Inu with English breeds (Bull terrier & Bulldog) that had very strong bone structure and fierce character. In Japan there is a very long tradition of breeding Tosa. Tosa Inu is often called “Sumo wrestler of the dog world” and the best of all with the highest title is celebrated and honoured as a national hero.

They have stable and reliable character. These dogs are loyal, very sensitive to the tone of voice, so you have to be also calm and sensitive while training them. The guarding role is natural for them because they are protective, courageous and fearless. They like to be close to their owners and will suffer very much if they are departed. Tosa Inu is not aggressive towards people. Tosa is a very noble dog, at the same time playful and serious, and they will bring so much joy into your life.
