Sauri Handmade Leather Dog Collars
The story about Workshop Sauri hand stitched collars begins with the collars that we designed and made for our own dogs. Twenty years of choosing between choke collars and different buckle collars left us with a simple conclusion: when taking a large breed dog to a walk none of the collars we used didn’t serve quite well. Choke collars are hard to sit where they should (high on the dog’s neck) and if they don’t sit properly then they do not serve their purpose. Huge dogs (like Tosa and other tall and robust Molossers) pull hard in certain situations and if you are a woman no chance you can cope with their strength! Not all owners have free time to socialize their dogs early and even when they do they will still find themselves in situations when the dogs simply won’t listen. Whoever claims against this true simple fact – might be just showing off? We also didn’t find metal choke collars to be a great solution during the colder weather conditions especially if you are out on a long walk.
Breeding dogs is our serious love and designing is our work. We put our knowledge and our love together to create a perfect dog walking collar, one that will be both functional and eye-catching. Guided by the principle that simplicity is the key to a perfect design we made our first dog collar using a red full-grain cowhide, a buckle, D-ring and a thread. It was a 7 cm (2.75 in) wide and 12 mm (0.5 in) thick collar with no decorative rivets and no spikes which we always found a bit odd ornament for large breed dogs – Why would you want to emphasize that your pet is dangerous for its surroundings? Does your dog really need another set of stabbing teeth around its neck? Don’t think so.
A lot of dog owners that I came across over the years didn’t actually understand their dog bodies’ needs. They simply didn’t observe the animal behavior, and there is a difference between a satisfied and a discontent dog. Our Tosa male was never happy to wear a nylon collar and it bothered him a lot during everyday walks. I came to a conclusion that he might be oversensitive to synthetics or to all sorts of fabrics on his neck since both his skin and hair were very supple. That’s why we put our first collar first around Haragei’s neck. Honestly I didn’t expect too much because he was always thrilled to go to a walk but never with putting on the collar. But it was a love at first sight! You could see his content with the collar, a combination of natural leather feel and a weight of the robust collar on his neck that brought up a dignified posture whenever he worn it. And the other dogs from our kennel reacted joyfully – like we were approaching them with their favorite toy or treat.
Since our first simple collar we traveled a long but not complicated artistic journey, adding symbolical embossing, unique hand prints, miniature elegant ornaments etc. always keeping in mind that “less is more” when you design for animals. All ornaments are safely attached but never in contact with the dogs neck and fur. We put nubuck background leather with no riveting on the inner side. It is hard to hand stitch but it is really worthwhile: such collar causes zero irritation!
Sauri collar is compact, firm but not stiff. Some models are designed for gentler lady dogs and some collars are made exceptionally mighty using full grain harness leather. Those are exactly the collars that we found to be the best solution for huge powerful males: because of its width the collar sits where it should so that multi layered leather can serve as a choke collar should – stopping the dog from pulling you too hard.
